Energy Efficiency in Switzerland

Switzerland's climate policy is shaped by the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 °C. In Switzerland, buildings are responsible for about 25% of greenhouse gas emissions and are therefore the focus of regulatory measures.

These regulatory frameworks are becoming increasingly stringent, prompting investors to focus more on energy-efficient buildings. Such investments are not only crucial for a sustainable future but also make economic sense.

The Cantonal Building Energy Certificate GEAK rates buildings from A (very energy-efficient, e.g., new building standard) to G (inefficient, in need of renovation). This official assessment method in Switzerland provides an objective evaluation of the energy efficiency of properties by analyzing and classifying buildings based on their energy consumption and CO2 emissions uniformly across the country.

Since March 2023, authorities have also published the CO2 emissions of all Swiss residential properties under standard conditions on the Federal Geoportal .

Our classifications are based on online available data, standard sizing rules from Swiss norms, and assumptions based on statistical surveys.
